Turning Point: The Fight Against NTDs in Argentina

March 1st, 2011

Terra, a major news source in Argentina, wrote an article highlighting the growing relationship between the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases and La Fundación Mundo Sano.  The inauguration of the National Institute for Tropical Medicine (INMeT) marks “a new era in quest of solutions to diseases affecting the impoverished provinces in North Argentina.”

The Global Network, the advocacy arm of Sabin Vaccine Institute, has collaborated with INMeT since its inception, working with Latin American governments to strengthen their response to include neglected disease programming in their public policies.

The joint partnership between La Fundación Mundo Sano and Global Network has been running for more than a year. Our efforts are concentrated in Oran, Salta Province, where massive intervention within the community is being carried out in order to fight strongyloides stercoralis, also known as threadworm, a human parasitic roundworm.

Silvia Gold,  La Fundación Mundo Sano’s President, highlighted the fact that Argentina is undergoing a turning point in terms of the fight against tropical diseases.

“For many years we have been trying to build up on knowledge development that can help public policy decision makers eradicate these diseases. We believe that we are contributing to that, and feel that the INMeT creation is a dream come true”

Additionally, Dr. Neeraj Minstry, Managing Director of  the Global Network, was recently spotlighted in La Nacion, a big newspaper source in Argentina. Read about that article here! Also, check out the spotlight on our collaborative relationship with La Fundación Mundo Sano here!

February 15th, 2011

Taken from Eideard.wordpress.com

Today, Indian-Commodity. com, an online resource for the latest news in the Indian market,  highlighted India’s Defense Research and Development Organization’s (DRDO)  new partnership with Jyothy Laboratories Ltd in formulating and distributing “multi insect repellent, in various formats, to the masses for their protection from painful insect bites and vector borne diseases as a spin off defense technology for civil society in India and abroad.”  After decades of research, DRDO has “successfully developed a new molecule Dietthyl phenyl Acetamide (DEPA), a breakthrough technology to fight away deadly mosquitoes which transmit diseases like dengue [...] and elephantiasis,” both of which are common neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).  These multi-insect repellents will come in the form of cream, spray, lotion, and wipes.  Yesterday afternoon, the company launched the products at a private function in New Delhi, India.  How this product will be distributed and whether this product will be available to those who can’t afford to buy it is still unclear.

Jyothy Laboratories, a product creation and management company based in India, has been assigned the task of developing the technology to manufacture the repellent under the strict supervision of the Indian Defense Ministry.  “Today, [they have a] pan Indian presence with brands catering to the needs of consumers across the length and breadth of the nation.”

Dear Dengue, We are coming to ELIMINATE you.

February 11th, 2011

We just recently posted about The Cost of Dengue in The Americas and today, the International Vaccine Institute (IVI)  announced the launch of the Dengue Vaccine Initiative (DVI). The initiative is a collaborative project with the Sabin Vaccine Institute (Sabin), the Johns Hopkins University (JHU), and the World Health Organization (WHO) “to support development of vaccines to control dengue fever, a widespread and expanding hemorrhagic fever that is endemic in most tropical and subtropical regions of the world.”

Dengue Fever is a mosquito-borne infection caused by four distinct, yet closely related viruses. The disease is common in tropical areas of the world and has led to death.  The Dengue Vaccine Initiative will begin their efforts in Colombia, Thailand, Brazil, and Vietnam and seeks to raise awareness and political will to prioritize vaccine development towards the eradication of dengue.
