The Role of PDPs in the Fight Against NTDs

By: Ted Miles, Program Coordinator, Sabin Vaccine Development

Sabin Vaccine Development, the Sabin Vaccine Institute’s product development partnership (PDP), focuses on creating safe, effective, and low-cost vaccines for infectious and neglected tropical diseases in developing countries. Our research and development experience has produced a comprehensive, low-cost PDP model that serves as a blueprint for non-profit vaccine research and development.

Our PDP is comprised of partners from across the globe. Partners include:

  • Baylor College of Medicine and George Washington University in the United States
  • Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ) and Instituto Butantan in Brazil
  • James Cook University in Australia
  • London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom
  • The Institute of Parasitic Diseases at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China

Through our collaboration with these institutions we are working to develop new vaccines that have essentially no commercial market value in the developed world but would meet a vital need for the world’s poorest populations. It is through PDPs like ours that we can prevent diseases like human hookworm, schistosomiasis, and malaria that primarily affect those living on less than $1 per day.

An article recently published in the Financial Times highlights the important role that PDPs play in the fight against NTDs, click here to read the full publication.
