On October 11, World Sight Day, the Mectizan Donation Program (MDP) celebrated their 25 year anniversary in London.
Over the past 25 years, the MDP has donated around one billion treatments of Mectizan to more than 117,000 communities suffering from onchocerciasis in 28 African countries, 6 Latin American countries, and Yemen. With the help of international partners in both the private and public sector, there have been no new cases of onchocersiasis identified in four of the six Latin American countries and nine regions in five African countries.
The MDP was founded in 1987 as an initiative of Merck & Co, and has pledged to donate as much Mectizan as needed until onchocerciasis is eliminated. To learn more about the program and watch a video of their efforts, go .
