Global Network Releases a New Report on NTD Control and Elimination

Today, the Global Network released a new report entitled “Ending Neglected Tropical Diseases: Opportunities to Support the Control and Elimination of NTDs.” This report offers an analysis of the progress made, challenges remaining and new opportunities in the global effort to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by 2020. This report stems from discussions at the Development Agency Roundtable, which was held in Berlin, Germany last year and hosted together by the Global Network, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and World Bank Group.

With forward sections from our four NTD Special Envoys, incredible NTD success stories from Burundi, India, and Mexico, and recognition of the importance of addressing from leaders of global development organizations, the report is a powerful new advocacy tool to raise attention to NTDs. The report calls for national governments and other partners worldwide to:

  • Recognize the impact of NTDs as a key underlying constraint to global economic growth, poverty and inequality reduction, educational achievement and nutrition.
  • Institutionalize NTD control and elimination efforts in foreign policy, development and poverty reduction agendas.
  • Invest in and prioritize nationally-led integrated NTD plans by providing political support, reliable long-term financing and technical assistance.
  • Promote the fight against NTDs in international and regional forums and support the inclusion of NTD-specific goals and targets in the post-2015 development agenda.

We hope you enjoy the report, and feel free to share it with friends and colleagues.

Global Network Takes the Fight against NTDs to Europe

Over the past two weeks, the Global Network traveled through Europe to raise the profile for NTDs and encourage support from European bilateral aid agencies, policymakers and other key stakeholders in France, Germany, Denmark and Norway.

The trip started in France, where GN’s managing director, Dr. Neeraj Mistry, spoke at the European Commission Colloquium Helminth Symposium to discuss research priorities for NTDs.  He also met with representatives from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French Development Agency to learn how the Global Network can collaborate with France to address NTD issues. Following his meetings in France, Dr. Mistry travelled to Denmark to discuss our work and explore areas of collaboration with representatives from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In Germany, Dr. Mistry was joined by the Global Network’s NTD Special Envoy, President John A. Kufuor where they attended an event co-hosted by the Sabin Vaccine Institute and vfa, the German trade organization for research-based pharmaceutical companies. The event included workshop discussion with representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Merck KGaA, Merck & Co., Inc., Eisai Co. Ltd., Bayer HealthCare, Sanofi, and the British Parliament, among several others. Following the afternoon event, global health experts and pharmaceutical representatives gathered for a panel discussion on NTD control and a keynote address by President Kufuor.

Finally, in Norway, President Kufuor and the Global Network team met with Mr. Dagfinn Høybråten and other members of the Norwegian Parliament to discuss NTDs. We applaud Norway’s commitment to global health and its efforts to end the suffering of more than a billion people by joining us to fight against NTDs. Impacting NTDs and the “Big Three”

The 2011 World Health Summit wrapped up last month in Berlin, Germany. The Global Network was in attendance represented by Managing Director Dr. Neeraj Mistry, who discusses on the ONE Campaign Germany blog the importance of integrating efforts to address NTDs with those that address the “Big Three” – HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Find the English version of the blogpost below:

The 2011 World Health Summit brought together over 1,500 global health experts from over 75 countries to raise awareness of key issues in global health during October 23-26.  One such issue that the global health community must address is neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Over the last month, I’ve talked with you here on the ONE Deutschland Blog about the global impact of NTDs. We desperately need to draw attention to these diseases, to raise public awareness, and eventually eliminate NTDs.  At the World Health Summit, the Global Network hosted a symposium where we discussed the link between NTD control with control of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Today I’d like to extend that discussion to you.

NTD treatment improves not only the health, but also the economic development and education of individuals and entire communities. Addressing NTDs will be essential to meeting the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), meant to help lift the world’s poorest countries out of extreme poverty by the year 2015. In light of that, the United States, the United Kingdom and other G8 member countries have made commitments to NTD programs that have resulted in enormous gains in the treatment and prevention of these diseases.
